Italian Murano Beads – Centuries of Venetian Art in Every Piece
Some jewellery doesn’t just sparkle — it carries centuries of history within it. At The Anaya Collections, one of our greatest joys is working with Italian Murano beads, crafted by master glassmakers on the island of Murano since 1291.
A Legacy Born in Venice
Venice has been a centre of glassmaking for centuries, with artisans creating stained glass for churches as far back as the 7th century. But in 1291, a major change came — all glassmakers were moved to the nearby island of Murano to protect the city from the fire hazards of their blazing furnaces.
This move didn’t just keep Venice safe — it turned Murano into a global hub of glassmaking excellence. Concentrated on one small island, artisans began experimenting, innovating, and perfecting techniques that the world still treasures today.
The Art Behind Murano Beads
Early Venetian beads were made by winding molten glass around a rod, with different metallic oxides giving life to colours — cobalt for deep blues, copper for rich greens, and more. Over the centuries, Murano glassmakers developed techniques that became their signature:
-
Millefiori: A stunning mosaic effect created by fusing together slices of multicoloured glass canes.
-
Aventurine: Glass infused with sparkling copper particles, giving it a magical shimmer.
-
Lattimo: A milky white glass with the elegance of porcelain.
-
Enamelled glass (Smalto): Glass decorated with colourful enamel designs, almost like painting on light.
Murano beads travelled far beyond Italy — they were traded with Africa, the Americas, and India, sometimes even used as currency. Their intricate patterns and vibrant colours made them symbols of beauty and prestige across continents.
Our Murano Beads – From Italy to You
Today, while many try to replicate Murano’s style, the original beads from Italy remain unmatched in quality, detail, and artistry.
We import these authentic Murano beads in a variety of shapes and sizes, straight from Venetian glassmakers who still honour centuries-old techniques. In our workshop, we give them new life in two ways:
-
Dainty chains that let the beads be the star of the design.
-
Supplying them to real gold jewellers who incorporate them into fine jewellery pieces.
