Keshi Pearls – Nature’s Unscripted Masterpieces
At The Anaya Collections, we’ve always been drawn to jewellery that tells a story — and some of the best stories are written by nature herself. That’s exactly what makes Keshi pearls so special.
What Makes Keshi Pearls Different
The word Keshi comes from the Japanese word for poppy seed, a nod to their early small sizes. But modern Keshi pearls can surprise you — some grow to impressive sizes, especially those from South Sea and Tahitian oysters.
Keshi pearls are non-nucleated, meaning they form without the round bead typically used in pearl cultivation. Sometimes, during the culturing process, the oyster rejects the nucleus, but still continues to coat the inside with pure nacre. The result? A pearl with irregular, organic shapes, incredible lustre, and a one-of-a-kind charm.

A Brief Journey Through History
Keshi pearls were first discovered in Japan, during the rise of Akoya pearl cultivation. Their natural beauty caught the attention of Indian traders, who had a long history with natural pearls. Soon, Keshi pearls began making their way to India, where they were prized for their raw elegance.
Over time, these pearls captured the hearts of jewellery lovers around the world, becoming a favourite for those who wanted pieces that felt truly unique.
Types of Keshi Pearls
Each type of Keshi pearl tells its own story:
-
Akoya Keshi – Classic, elegant, and typically white with delicate pink or cream overtones.
-
South Sea Keshi – Larger, with colours ranging from luminous white to rich gold.
-
Tahitian Keshi – Exotic and dramatic, in shades of deep green, black, blue-green, and bronze.
